From Lubec Maine To
Campobello Island
The bridge from Lubec Maine provides the gateway to Campobello Island, New Brunswick. Just over the bridge, the Roosevelt Campobello International Park 'is a joint memorial by Canada and the United States, and a symbol of the close relationship between the two countries’, and is, I believe, the only park operated cooperatively by two nations.
Just two hours beyond the tourist congestion of Bar Harbor, Maine is the gloriously peaceful New Brunswick island, Campobello. Approached through Lubec Maine, the most northeastern town in the United States, breathtakingly beautiful seaside vistas surprise the first time visitor at almost every curve of the road. Spectacular views continue and seem to escalate as the traveler crosses the international bridge connecting Campobello with the mainland USA.
The West Quoddy Light of Lubec Maine
Lubec Maine is the lovely Bay of Fundy setting for the West Quoddy Light.
We last departed from Lubec Maine on September 10, 2001 to drive to our home on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. (We moved to the New Port Richey area of Florida's Gulf Coast in 2003.)
Ironically, we drove through Portland, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts as terrorists passed through those cities on their path to destruction of the Twin Towers on September 11. Sadly the Nortons from Lubec were on American Airline Flight 11 which exploded into the World Trade Center. Wikipedia reports that 'Robert Norton, 85, was the oldest person to die that day directly as a result of the attacks'.

Fields of the lovely pink Lupines are everywhere bordering the Bay of Fundy greeting the traveler through Lubec and Campobello Island.

The East Quoddy Lighthouse on Campobello
The northern tip of the island is splashed by the bright red cross on the most photographed lighthouse in Canada (and perhaps the world). East Quoddy Light is accessible only at low tide as it sits atop a small rocky island. Visitors have to keep a close eye on the time and the tide since the Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world - sometimes as much as 48 feet between low tide and high tide! Being stranded at the top of a rocky outcropping for would not be very comfortable.
Fishing, touring and whale watching boats ply nearby Head Harbor with frequent sightings of eagles, seals, whales, and porpoises. Some of the best fishing in the world is accomplished off the shores of Campobello.
A summer ferry service from Welshpool transports vehicles past the Old Sow (the world’s second largest whirl pool) to Deer Island and then to the New Brunswick mainland where exploration of the Bay of Fundy can be expanded to include Canada’s Fundy Coastal Drive and Fundy National Park.

The Campobello Island of Franklin Delano Roosevelt
During the last half of the nineteenth century and the opening decades of the twentieth century this beautiful, unspoiled isle was the summer play land of a group of well to do and influential Americans who purchased most of the island in 1881, formed the Campobello Company and built three luxurious hotels (no longer in existence).
In 1883 James and Sara Roosevelt purchased a partially completed home with spectacular views of Passamaquoddy Bay. Their one year old son, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, spent every summer of his life on what he called his “beloved island” until he was afflicted with polio in August of 1921. In 1934 Franklin Roosevelt was elected President of the United States, and except for three very brief visits was unable to return to his much cherished Campobello, although Eleanor and their five children continued to spend glorious summers at the ‘cottage’.
The Roosevelt Campobello International Park including the Roosevelt Cottage was established in 1964 by Canada and the United States as a historical monument to President Roosevelt relationship to both nations and their unique closeness to one other.
