My Favorite Cape Cod Beaches
Nauset Beach
I was privileged to enjoy and photograph most of the spectacular Cape Cod Beaches during my 20 years as a resident Cape Codder.
Nauset Beach (pictured above) is a magnificent stretch of
surf and sand bordered by the Orleans Cove on the north, and the promontory of Nauset Outer Beach to the south.
I've been body surfing the waves at Nauset since my children were young, enjoying the seafood at the concession, and walking the beach and the
4-wheel trails.
YELP has lots of photos and reviews of Cape Cod Beaches including Nauset
Beach.

Pleasant Bay
Even the drive to Nauset Beach is delightful whether you're coming from the historic homes along Route 6A; or arriving via Route 28 as it snakes besides Pleasant Bay in Chatham and Harwich.
Cape Cod National Seashore
Fort HillHeading north from Nauset is a joyful adventure as you enter the beaches
of the Cape Cod National Seashore including Fort Hill with its breath taking views, the Eastham Visitor's Center, and the historic Marconi telegraph site overlooking another beautiful stretch of beach along the Atlantic Ocean.

The Captain Penniman House is at the bottom of the hill leading to the panoramic view and trail at Fort Hill. The site is well worth the two minute detour off of Route 6!
Across from the Penniman House is the Cedar Swamp Trail which follows a long, winding boardwalk through the tree covered swamp. Lots of fun and interesting too. |
Salt Pond Visitors Center and Coast Guard Beach
Continuing north, a really informative stop is the Eastham Visitor's Center, located just a couple of miles down a tree lined bike trail from Coastguard Beach. And, yes, you can drive if you want to, but parking at the historic Coastguard Station is very limited.
The Visitor's Center shows videos in the theater and ranger talks in the outdoor amphitheater. Educational displays and a gift shop keep the whole family happy and involved. I love to follow the walking trail past the Salt Pond and along the stream that leads across the marsh.

Marconi Beach
Named after the famous inventor of the first wireless to cross the Atlantic,
this Cape Cod National Seashore beach features vignettes of the historic 1903 message between the U.S. President and the King of England and a few artifacts of the event.
Marconi Beach is one of my favorite Cape Cod beaches! The photo to the right is of a typically wonderful beach day at Marconi that I turned into a painting!
And, the view from two cliff top platforms is spectacular.
The White Cedar Swamp trail which enters from the parking lot is another reason Marconi is one of my favorites. A boardwalk wanders through the swamp bringing you through several ecosystems with lots of opportunities for photography!
Actually, if you are serious about your photography art, Cape Cod beaches, parks and historic structures are a bonanza!
On our 2009 tour of the south of England we unexpectedly stumbled on another Marconi site at Podhu Beach around a steep bend in a narrow road.

Great Island Wellfleet
Hike To A Beach With Peace and Privacy!Great Island is a perfect beach destination if your idea of the perfect beach is seclusion, and you enjoy a good walk!
After a lovely drive past the harbor and through the scenic Wellfleet waterfront, the road ends at a parking lot. From there you hoof through
5 to 7 miles (depending on whose review you read)...and explore.
Great Island juts out into Cape Cod Bay, and was once occupied by a
descendant of the pilgrim, Priscilla Mullen. It is now part of the Cape Cod
National Seashore on the bay-side.
Dunes and a quiet beach sidle up to Cape Cod Bay, and provide
what is a peaceful, secluded day at one of my absolute favorite Cape
Cod beaches. Perfect for a leisurely swim and picnic, or a long nap.
The trail to the harbor side of the island meanders through a tranquil forest
- a refreshing break from the sun.
We suggest bringing Skin So Soft along in case the Green Head Flies are
active. They really are the only downside, but Skin So Soft keeps them away!
Oh, and be sure to check the tides before you go if you want to swim!
Cape Cod Bay retreats a long way at low tide, but the kids will have
a ball walking the flats, and your camera will be very busy!

Breakwater beach, brewster
Breakwater Beach was like home to me when I lived in Brewster. A couple of miles from home, it was within biking distance. Low tide brought a hunt for crabs, snails and other sea creatures as the water receded to the horizon, but at high tide the icy water was a treat after a hot bike ride. Evenings found sailboats anchored off-shore and the parking lot full with the evening sunset watchers waiting for heaven's spectacular paint brush.
